The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra announces the opening of the 20th concert season and hopes that this year will become a special year for the orchestra and its devoted listeners. This evening is a rare chance to listen to Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand, which may be the composer’s largest and, certainly, the grandest, work. The jubilee season is also marked by a special project dedicated to the composer Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989). In 2008, the world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary master of the baton, who is still called “Europe’s general music director”. The concert cycle, which is prepared at the Vilnius Congress Palace and will last from 2008 to the autumn of 2009, will present famous conductors from various countries, winners the H. von Karajan Conductors’ Competition. Held since 1969, it is one of the most famous and prestigious competitions. Symbolically, the conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius, one of the winners of the competition, starts the opening concert of the cycle this season.
